AIRCRAFT RATINGS

 Aircraft Ratings

With a wide variety of aircraft available, members are spoilt for choice on different aircraft to obtain ratings on (refer to 'The Fleet' for the range of aircraft). Once a PPL is obtained, members often learn to fly different aircraft, to improve their skills and provide a greater selection of aircraft for those trips away.  Ratings normally require a couple of hours flying with an instructor in the aircraft before being completed.

 Night Rating

Many pilots enjoy the pleasure of flying around Auckland city and its surrounds at night.

The requirements for a PPL night rating is:

  • 5 hours night flying total time
  • 2 hours dual flight time at night
  • 2 hours solo flight time at night
  • 2 hours instrument flight time

The requirements for a CPL night rating is:

  • 10 hours night flying total time
  • 4 hours dual flight time at night
  • 5 hours solo flight time at night
  • 2 hours instrument flight time

 Aerobatics Rating

One of the most exciting and thrilling experiences of taking to the air is learning aerobatics flying - loops, rolls, stall turns, spins plus lots more!  The club has two aerobatics aircraft, a Cessna 152 and Slingsby, along with three experienced aerobatics instructors.  Find out more information on the 'Aerobatics' page, under the PPL section of this website.

 Multi Engine Rating

For those pilots interested in persuing an airline career or those looking for an exciting challenge, a multi engine rating is a rewarding and enjoyable additions to everyones flying record.  A multi-engine rating requires a minimum of 5 hours dual instruction in a multi-engine aircraft, which can be completed in the clubs Partenavia.

 Instrument Flight Rating

Another necessary requirement for persuing an airline career is obtaining an Instrument Rating, which enables pilots to safely fly under the sole reference of their instruments.  The requirements for the issue of an Instrument Rating is:

  • 50 hours VFR Cross country navigation flight time as Pilot in Command
  • 10 hours Dual Instrument Cross Country flight time
  • 40 hours Instrument time which includes 20 hours Instrument time in an aircraft
  • Complete an Instrument Flight Ground Course
